A bone density scan or bone densitometry (DEXA) is used as a screening and diagnostic test for osteoporosis. The DEXA scan measures the amount of calcified tissue in the bones, which is referred to as bone mineral density (BMD). This information is used by the provider in developing a treatment plan for osteoporosis.
